Bread and Roses, Too by Katherine Patterson (rescheduled from April)

Paterson, author of Bridge to Terabithia, draws upon the facts of the famous 1912 Bread and Roses strike in the mills of Lawrence, MA to tell the story of two children in this moving portrait of friendship and justice. Well-researched and important, this book paints a full picture of the settings, conditions, and events of a turbulent time in the history of the United States.

The book club will meet the second Tuesday of each month and is open to all teens (ages 13 and up). New members are always welcome!

Teen Drum Workshop

Saturday May 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 4:00 p.m.

Local musician and teacher Steve Collins leads a series of drumming workshops for teens which will meet on Saturday May 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 4:00 p.m. The focus of these workshops will be on Africa hand drumming. Interested teens can register for this workshop at the library or by calling 758-6192 (space is limited). Participants are asked to bring a drum if they have one, as a limited number of drums will be provided at the workshops. Come make some noise!

On Saturday, May 24 at 4:00 pm participants will perform for the community; everyone is welcome to attend! A reception will follow the performance to mark the conclusion of the program.

Collins's drum workshops are part of our Musical Journeys festival that has been made possible with public funds from the Decentralized Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered through the Twin Counties Cultural Fund in Columbia County by the Columbia County Council on the Arts. The library would also like to thank the Friends of Kinderhook Memorial Library for their additional support.

Teen Movie Night

Come see why movie critic Roger Ebert wrote "It's goofy fun with a lot of stuff that blows up real good." Soda and popcorn will be served.

Teen Book Club

This animated movie was one of the summer's hottest films; don't miss your chance to catch it at the Kinderhook Memorial Library! Donuts and other light refreshments will be served. D'oh!

Teen Game Night on Candlelight Night
Teens, are you tired of roaming the village looking for something to do on Candlelight Night? Kinderhook Memorial Library is proud to partner with Boy Scout Troop 113 to host a teen game night upstairs in the Village Hall from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 7. Check out the Village festivities, and then show your gaming skills on the big screen! Light refreshments will be served. If you'd like to donate your game system or family friendly games to be used during the night, please contact Alanna at am389952@albany.edu.

Congratulations to Our Battle of the Books Team!

Congratulations to the five local teens who traveled to Millbrook High School on Saturday, September 15 to represent Kinderhook Memorial Library. The team competed against thirteen other teams in a regional trivia competition based on content from ten books written for young adults. They proved themselves to be outstanding competitors as they "battled" through four rounds. Congratulations again for a job well done!

Teen Read Week

Join us for Teen Read Week, a national literacy initiative aimed at teens, their parents, librarians and educators. Since 1998, Teen Read Week has encouraged teens to:

· Make time to read for the fun of it
· Use their local library to discover their interests
· Get reading materials and participate in events at their school or public library

This year's theme encourages teens to read humorous books and graphic novels just 'for the fun of it'. Teen librarian Alanna Almstead encourages teens to stop by the library to check out some of the library's new titles. Take your chances on a new author or title and you could win big! Look in any young adult book during Teen Read Week and in addition to finding some great books, you could find a special bookmark entitling you to a "Get out of fines free" card good for one overdue item. All teens who find a bookmark will also be entered in a drawing for cool prizes. Stop by the library and check it out!

Our Battle of the Books Team heads off to Millbrook High School on Saturday, September 15 to compete in a regional trivia competition based on content from ten novels written for young adults. Nine Kinderhook teens in grades 6-9 spent the summer reading and honing their trivia skills. We wish them the best of luck at the Regional Battle!

Create A Graphic Novel Workshop for Teens

If you haven't heard of her either, it could be because she's been busy creating her latest graphic novel. (Graphic Novels are really comic books, only longer!) Barbara Slate is a cartoonist who has written, drawn and created over 300 stories--for Marvel, DC Comics, and Archie Comics, where she currently writes Betty and Veronica. Barbara's art has been described by The New York Times as "Bold, imaginative figurative work, somewhat quirky and offbeat." She is featured as one of the century's most important women cartoonists in A Century of Women Cartoonists.

Maybe your interest is a Super Hero, your own life story, or you-know-it's-in there-somewhere-dying to get out. Barbara will teach you how to develop characters, plot stories and offer tips on the creative process. At the end of the series, workshop participants will have created a 6-24 page graphic novel/comic book of their own. "Bring your work!" Barbara says, "And if you don't have any, let's get started!"

Space in this program is limited to 15 teenagers! The program will meet on Wednesdays from September 12 through October 17 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Sign up now by stopping by the library or by calling 758-6192.

The next meeting of the Teen Advisory Board (T.A.B.) will be Thursday, September 13 from 4:00-4:45 p.m. If you're a teen interested in making a difference in our community, join us!!! The T.A.B. plays an important role in planning library events that appeal to local teens. On September 13 we will be planning our October teen night as well as discussing plans for Teen Read Week events. Light snacks will be served (Mmm, cookies!!!). Eating Disorders Panel Presentation

Eating disorders affect many men, women, boys, and girls in our community but, being a personal and sensitive topic, it is often not talked about openly. Join us on Monday, August 27 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for a unique opportunity to join experts in the field to talk about eating disorders. You will learn signs and symptoms, what to do if you think a friend has an eating disorder, what to do if you suspect you might have one, and how to talk with someone who has been through treatment. Panelists will stay after the forum to talk privately with those wishing to. The panelists include:

Dr. Julie N. Morison, a clinical psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at Albany Medical Center

Joan Ostrow, Project Director for the Northeast Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders at Albany Medical College

Kelly Van Allen-Braswell, a registered dietician specializing in pediatric eating disorders

A student currently in recovery from an eating disorder

Anime Club for Teens

Kinderhook Library's teen only Anime club has been screening films all summer. During the month of August the club will be watching Samurai 7, a Japanese anime series based on Akira Kurosawa's popular 1954 movie Seven Samurai. The club meets at the Library on most Mondays to watch and discuss Japanese animation. New members are always welcome!

End of Summer Teen Mystery Night

Okay, so it's not quite the end of summer, but we're having a party anyway! Come for the food and stay for the drawing awarding the Teen Reading Challenge prizes. Teens can enter the drawing by submitting simple book review forms for each book they have read over the summer. The more you read the better your chances of winning a prize! Prizes include gift certificates and other goodies.

So what's the mystery? The library will be screening a mystery movie...party goers will select one of three choices the night of the party.

Harry Potter Night

Friday, July 20 from 8:00 p.m. until midnight

It's hard to believe that J.K. Rowling has officially finished the Harry Potter series! The final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, will be released on Saturday, July 21. Come celebrate in Kinderhook the night before!

Blackwood and Brouwer Booksellers, the Kinderhook Memorial Library, and the Valatie Free Library, will be hosting a party on Friday, July 20 from 8:00 p.m. until midnight!

Some activities will run continually throughout the evening. Blackwood and Brouwer will have food, trivia games, and other activities at the bookstore (7 Hudson Street). The Valatie Library will be at the bandstand in the Kinderhook Village Square with fun activities, including a make-your-own wizard's hat table--the best wizard's hat gets a prize!*

At 8:30 p.m., the Kinderhook Library will show the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Join us in the air-conditioned library for Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts. The year is marked by the Quidditch World Cup and the Triwizard Tournament, in which student representatives from three different wizarding schools compete in a series of increasingly challenging contests. Will Harry rise to the challenge of the Triwizard Tournament? Will he be able to keep up with his school work? Will Voldemort, the Dark Lord, rise again? Find out at the library!

At 11:30 p.m., the last chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be read aloud at the Kinderhook Library which will take us right up to the stroke of midnight when people who have pre-ordered their copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
can pick them up at the bookstore and start reading! Be among the first in Kinderhook to know what happens!

Then again, why wait to see how the Harry Potter series ends? Write your own ending! Enter our contest for a chance to win a $30 gift certificate for Blackwood and Brouwer Booksellers. Submit your idea on an official entry form anytime before 11:30 p.m. on Harry Potter Night to be entered in the competition. The entry closest to J.K. Rowling's finale wins. Winners will be notified by August 1. Official entry forms will be available at Blackwood and Brouwer Booksellers, Kinderhook Memorial Library, and the Valatie Free Library starting Thursday, July 5. Submissions can be made at any of the three locations.

Who you gonna call?

Is Kinderhook Memorial Library haunted? On Friday, July 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. teens may be able to find out! In keeping with the NYS summer reading theme You Never Know @ Your Library, the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will be hosting an evening celebrating the unexplained, starting with the classic 80's movie Ghost Busters (1984 - rated PG). Nothing goes better with a movie than a few tasty snacks - unfortunately you won't be finding them here. The TAB challenges all teens with an iron stomach with the question "Are you gonna eat that?" by setting up a table of delectably gross (but perfectly edible) treats. Top all that off with a costume contest and you have all the makings of ghoulishly good evening. Who's going to show up? You never know...

Battle of the Books Team Forming

All teens interested in joining the Kinderhook Memorial Library Battle of the Books Team should attend a planning meeting on Tuesday, June 5 at 6 p.m. at the library.

The Battle of the Books is a jeopardy style trivia competition that involves reading ten selected book and "battling" teams from all over the Mid-Hudson Library System for title of champion. The Battle of the Books is a wonderful opportunity for young people to experience the excitement of good literature while enjoying the challenge of an educational competition.

All young people who will be entering 6th through 9th grade in the fall are eligible to join the team. We will meet several times over the summer to discuss the books, participate in some fun activities, and take part in local battles in preparation for the Regional Battle in September.

At the June 5 meeting we will talk about the details of the competition, discuss the summer schedule, and give out titles for participants to read. Hope to see you there!
