Teen Book Club: The Big Readers

Wednesday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m.

Looking for a good book to read? The Big Readers Book Club meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. to discuss a book chosen by the group. The next meeting is Wednesday, February 21.

This month’s book selection is Storm Thief, a darkly thrilling new novel from master storyteller Chris Wooding. The city of Orokos has stood untouched on a rocky island for so long that history has forgotten it. The inhabitants no longer question what exists beyond its walls and are plagued by probability storms, bringing chaos to everything in their path. . .until a boy, a girl and a golem of metal and flesh make a discovery that might change their world forever. Need a copy of the book? Call or stop by the library to request one.

Anime Club for Teens

Meets Mondays from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Local anime afficionado Erik Burch has teamed up with our Teen Advisory Board to offer teenagers the opportunity to learn more about Japanese anime. The new anime club starts Monday, February 5 and will meet each Monday that school is in session from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m.

What is anime, you ask? Anime is a type of Japanese animation distinct from American-style cartoons in the quality of the images (usually a combination of computer animation and hand-drawn images) and the plots. Anime covers many genres including comedy, fantasy and science fiction, and drama. One of the most important distictions between anime and cartoons is the subject matter. Japanese animators take their art seriously and their story lines are often powerful with characters showing very human emotions and reactions. The setting and music are often moving or beautiful. Anime is also sometimes called "Japanimation" but the term anime has become preferred.

The first movie to be shown on February 5 is Howl's Moving Castle. When a witch's curse turns young Sophie into an old woman, she runs away from home. Soon she finds work as a cleaning woman in a moving castle belonging to the mysterious wizard Howl. A fire demon named Calcifer offers to remove Sophie's curse if she will help to free him from his magical contract with Howl.

Please note that the Anime Club will not meet on Mondays when Ichabod Crane Schools are closed for holidays, vacations, and snow days.
