Teen Book Club: The Big Readers
The “Big Readers” book club has chosen two titles for their next meeting on Wednesday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m. Read one or read both, but be sure to join us for fun, food, and discussion! Nancy Farmer's novel, The House of the Scorpion is a futuristic glimpse that may hit a little too close to home. To most people around him, Matt is not a boy, but a beast. A room full of chicken litter with roaches for friends and old chicken bones for toys is considered good enough for him. But for El Patrón, lord of a country called Opium -- a strip of poppy fields lying between the U.S. and what was once called Mexico -- Matt is a guarantee of eternal life. El Patrón loves Matt as he loves himself; for Matt is himself. They share identical DNA. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult explores difficult issues a family can face when a child has been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. Conceived to provide a bone marrow match for her leukemia-stricken sister, teenage Kate begins to question her moral obligations in light of countless medical procedures and decides to fight for the right to make decisions about her own body.
Teen Book Club: The Big Readers
Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m.
What could be wrong with living in a world where looks are everything? Join our teen book club to find out! The Big Readers will discuss the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld on Wednesday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- but for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there. But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
